Is illness morally evil, or is it the morally neutral result of organisms like viruses and bacteria and cancer cells all doing their best to survive and replicate, just as they were created to do?
What does the sukkah tell us about where the “natural” ends and man’s making, the “artificial,” begins?
Nature is not an end in itself. Humanity is needed to complete that which was created to enhance what is natural.
Joy expands who we are. And that’s a message we need to remember for Sukkot.
The question isn’t “how Jewish are we?” or “how religious are we?” The real question is, “How can Judaism help us to become better people and to create a better world?”
