The Torah of the Muon: Science and Religion on Certainty and Uncertainty

How do you know what you know?

How much do we rely on experience, on what we can see and measure — and what is the role of conjecture, theory, and faith? Both the scientific method and rabbinic interpretation offer wisdom on certainty and uncertainty and their impact on our daily lives.

Dr. Adam Lyon (Oak Park Temple member) is an experimental particle physicist at Fermilab. He was closely involved with Fermilab’s Muon g-2 experiment, whose recently-revealed findings strengthen our certainty that the “Standard Model” of particle physics doesn’t explain the full picture of how things work.

Rabbi Geoffrey Mitelman is the Founding Director of Sinai and Synapses, an organization that bridges the scientific and religious worlds. He has been an adjunct professor at both the Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion and the Academy for Jewish Religion, and is an internationally sought-out teacher, presenter, and scholar-in-residence.

Dr. Lyon will present on the findings of Fermilab’s Muon g-2, and Rabbi Mitelman will offer a rabbinic exploration uncertainty, different ways of knowing, and how science differs from these kinds of questions. The two have worked together before, and Oak Park Temple is lucky to feature their Torah for our Shavuot study together.
