Paleontologists study time on a scale that is difficult for humans to grasp – millions, billions of years. How might that awe-some sense of time inform our spirituality and our sense of existence? What does it mean to – to Judaism, and to others faiths – to dive into deep time and understand how briefly humans have been on Earth, and what amazing things came before us?
Dr. Roy Plotnick is a paleontologist and professor emeritus in the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences at the University of Illinois at Chicago. He is a fellow of the Geological Society of America and the Paleontological Society. His new book, Explorers of Deep Time, is available from Columbia University Press.
