Screen Time During the Pandemic: A Conversation With Tiffany Shlain

Screen Time During the Pandemic: A Conversation With Tiffany Shlain

When we last spoke with Tiffany Shlain, the author of 24/6: The Power of Unplugging One Day a Week, it was January 2020, and few had any idea how much the world was about to change. The imperative to spend more time in our bodies and have more in-person interactions ran smack into the directive for social distancing. After a year of working from home and remote school, followed by eye strain from the quasi-eye contact while looking at our friends and colleagues through a screen, we are all feeling wearier from staying at home and trying to keep busy than many of us thought possible. The wisdom of Tiffany Shlain’s Tech Shabbat is more vital than ever, but our screen-dependent pandemic lives have added many new challenges to establishing the ritual. For Sacred Science, she and Rabbi Mitelman discussed some ways of setting boundaries, rediscovering enjoyment and just maybe finding some inner peace.
