Michael Gottlieb has recently retired as Associate Director of Science at the Foundation for the National Institutes of Health (FNIH) where he was primarily responsible for managing and leading research projects on global infectious diseases supported by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. He received his Ph.D. from the City University of New York and did postdoctoral research at Harvard Medical School and at NIH. Dr. Gottlieb was on the faculty at the Johns Hopkins School of Public Health before returning to the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases at NIH where he served as the Chief of the Parasitology and International Programs Branch. In that role, he developed programs to take advantage of emerging and enabling genomic technologies to characterize microbial pathogens responsible for significant human morbidity and mortality.
