How Much Control Do We Have? Reflections on Free Will and Determinism

What do our decisions mean in the grand course of the universe? What decisions can we chalk up to (epi)genetics, conditioning, our senses, or even physics, and how can we harness this knowledge to make better decisions? While modern research around free will ranges from minuscule impulses in the brain to the distant results of cosmic events, centuries of Jewish texts can offer a prescient synthesis of these different perspectives.

This video, created in collaboration with Fourth Line Films, features reflections from members and clergy of Temple Emanu-El in Providence, RI, including Rabbi Michael FelDr. Peter R. Saulson (Professor Emeritus in Physics at Syracuse University), and Dr. Victoria Templer Rotkow (Associate Professor of Psychology at Providence College), as well as Rabbi Annie Tucker (of Temple Israel Center in White Plains, NY).

Scientists in Synagogues programming has tackled the topic of free will in many different ways over the years:

Rabbi Annie Tucker was Senior Rabbi at Beth Hillel Bnai Emunah in Wilmette, IL when it was selected for Scientists in Synagogues in 2016. Subsequently, in 2018, the Princeton Jewish Center, where she had been Associate Rabbi from 2006-2013, was selected for the program – and in 2019, she became Senior Rabbi at Temple Israel Center, which had been part of Scientists in Synagogues in 2016.

In 2017, at Beth Hillel Bnai Emunah, she wrote an essay: How much free will did Pharaoh have in the Book of Exodus as he became increasingly entrenched in his callous decisions? She expands on her thoughts on this topic here.
