Maimonides, Prophecy and Science

Maimonides, Prophecy and Science

Did Maimonides see prophecy as a supernatural phenomenon? As Temple Adas Israel prepares for Rosh Hashanah, congregant David Gruenstein drew from Maimonides’ Guide for the Perplexed to discuss the Rambam’s radical theory about prophecy, sharing a Maimonidean view of the binding of Isaac, in dialogue with Rabbi Dan Geffen.

David received a B.A. from Columbia College and a J.D. from Harvard Law School. He practiced law for 35 years at Wachtell Lipton Rosen & Katz, where he was a litigation partner. He then retired from the active practice of law to start a second career as an investment adviser. He founded Gruenstein Investments LLC and its associated fund, Gruenstein Partners LP,  receiving his CFA designation in 2021.

As a lifelong learner, David has become a devotee of Maimonides and his Guide for the Perplexed. In the last few years, he has been studying Maimonides and the Guide on a regular basis. David is particularly focused on applying Maimonidean teachings to improve our own analysis of complex contemporary issues, whether secular or religious.
